Legend of the ink brush was invented by Meng Tian (210 BC) under the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty where primitive pottery containing decorative painted designs made by tools resembling a brush with clearly visible. This evidence suggests that the brush may have predated written language itself.
This peculiar detail of hair selection, craftsmanship in tying of the brush for shape and water retention, has been passed on for generations. Combined with the knowledge in shaving brushes from the Western world has allowed us to perfect the modern shaving brush knot.
